Former Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II shared a touching anecdote about the unwavering loyalty shown to him by the late chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc, Herbert Wigwe.

Speaking at a gathering during the night of tributes held in Lagos on Wednesday to honor Wigwe’s memory, Sanusi reminisced about the profound support he received from the late banker during his tumultuous times.

Recalling a pivotal moment, Sanusi revealed how he confided in Wigwe about his concerns several months before his eventual removal as emir by former governor Abdullahi Ganduje. “I thought I would die before Herbert,” Sanusi remarked, highlighting the deep bond between them.

Sanusi recounted how Wigwe stood by his side, offering reassurance and unwavering support throughout his trials in Kano. “He said to me, ‘Your Highness, don’t worry. Whatever happens, don’t worry. We are here for you,'” Sanusi recalled.

The former emir recounted the day he received the news of his dethronement and his immediate call to Wigwe, expressing his desire to travel to Lagos. In a remarkable display of friendship and solidarity, Wigwe swiftly arranged for a plane to transport Sanusi’s family to Lagos, providing them with accommodation and support during their time of need.

“Your Highness, if you want to travel, just call Sola,” Sanusi recounted, underscoring the enduring support offered by Wigwe and his family.

Wigwe, along with his wife Chizoba, son Chizi, and former group chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Southern California, United States, on February 9.
