Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday praised Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, describing him as a visionary builder who has significantly impacted the lives of the people. Obasanjo commended Obaseki’s focus on human capital development, urging other political leaders to prioritize this in their roles.
At the inauguration of the newly rebuilt 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, Obasanjo highlighted Obaseki’s multi-sectoral reforms that have transformed Edo State over the past eight years. He praised the hospital’s upgrade as a lasting tribute to his late wife, Stella Obasanjo, emphasizing that the facility reflects compassion and commitment to accessible healthcare.
Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, also lauded Obaseki, noting that he has restored hope and positioned Edo as a hub for affordable healthcare. Obasanjo added, “This hospital stands as a testament to strong leadership and will serve as a bridge between primary and specialized healthcare, ensuring equitable access for all.”
Obaseki reflected on his administration’s achievements, explaining that the pandemic underscored the need for a robust healthcare system. The governor highlighted Edo’s progress, from revamping primary healthcare centers across wards to establishing the state’s health insurance program, now covering over 300,000 residents. He affirmed his commitment to developing healthcare infrastructure, medical personnel, and health financing, which he said are foundational for sustainable growth in Edo.
Obaseki also expressed concerns about political interference disrupting the state’s projects, citing recent issues with the EFCC’s detention of key financial officials. He urged leaders to consider the long-term welfare of their people over political motives, warning, “Facilities like this may one day serve those who undermine them. We must put our people above narrow political interests.”
