Olalekan Okeola, an employee of the Nigerian Tribune Newspapers, has been presented before the Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, facing charges of allegedly stealing 26 car batteries valued at N2.1 million.
The 36-year-old, whose residence was undisclosed, was formally charged with theft on Thursday. According to the prosecutor, Insp. Gbemi Adedeji, the accused, Mr. Okeola, is accused of committing the offense on January 15, around 9:00 a.m., within the premises of the newspaper in Ibadan. Adedeji asserted that the defendant pilfered the batteries from company vehicles, and the alleged act is in violation of the Criminal Law Code of Oyo State, 2000.
Despite the charges, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty.
In response, Magistrate Adebola Adeola granted bail to Mr. Okeola in the sum of N200,000, along with two reliable sureties who must present a similar amount.
The case has been adjourned until February 15, 2024, for further proceedings.
