Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of distorting facts about how his 2023 running mate was chosen.
In a statement on Saturday, Olayinka dismissed Atiku’s claim that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) committee ranked former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as the preferred choice for the vice-presidential slot. Atiku had stated that Okowa topped the list, with Wike coming second and former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel in third, leading him to pick Okowa.
“So in 2023, I told the party to set up a committee to recommend three names. The committee ranked Okowa as the top choice, with Wike in second place and former Akwa Ibom Governor, Udom Emmanuel, in third. So I picked number one,” Atiku had claimed.
However, Olayinka countered this narrative, insisting that the committee overwhelmingly backed Wike, who secured 13 votes, while Okowa received only two. He further criticized Atiku for allegedly making false statements during Ramadan, citing Islamic teachings against dishonesty.
“Unfortunately, Atiku chose to tell lies so brazenly during the holy month of Ramadan, obviously forgetting that Allah does not hearken to the prayers of liars—perhaps why he has continually failed in his bid to become Nigeria’s president,” Olayinka stated.
He maintained that the PDP committee had recommended Wike as Atiku’s running mate, but for reasons known only to him, Atiku opted for Okowa instead.
“That’s the truth Atiku should tell and stand by, instead of attempting to rewrite history with falsehood,” he added.
Despite the controversy, Olayinka emphasized that Wike had no regrets over the decision.
“Wike never lobbied to be a running mate—Atiku offered, and he accepted under certain conditions. Regardless, Wike has moved on and stands by every decision he made,” he concluded.
