Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to partnering with MTN Nigeria Communications Plc to drive tourism development in the state.
Speaking on Wednesday during a courtesy visit by MTN’s management team, led by Chief Sales and Distribution Officer, Mr. Sida Adekunle, Governor Eno welcomed the telecom giant’s decision to host the MTN Champion Sports event in Akwa Ibom from April 29 to May 3.
“We appreciate your choice of Akwa Ibom for this talent hunt. Our administration is dedicated to promoting sports tourism, and we see this as an opportunity to showcase the state’s potential,” Eno stated.
Highlighting the state’s vision, he emphasized Akwa Ibom’s positioning as a tourism hub beyond oil, tapping into sports, agriculture, culture, and medical tourism. He credited past administrations for the state’s world-class infrastructure, including an extensive road network and aviation facilities like Ibom Air, which make the state an attractive destination for visitors and investors.
Governor Eno commended MTN for its investment in sports and urged the company to strengthen its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives while leveraging its platforms to promote Akwa Ibom.
“Please continue your CSR efforts and help showcase Akwa Ibom alongside MTN. We look forward to deepening our collaboration,” he added.
In response, Mr. Adekunle praised Governor Eno’s leadership and the implementation of the Arise Agenda, which has positioned Akwa Ibom as a key player in sports tourism. He lauded the state’s security framework and ongoing government support.
Adekunle also highlighted MTN’s investments in education, healthcare, and empowerment, revealing that six of the top 20 players from the first edition of the MTN Chance Sports competition hailed from Akwa Ibom.
He sought the government’s backing for the tournament’s second edition, set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, and invited Governor Eno to flag off the event on April 30, 2025.
