Aminat Ige, a Mathematics lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU), has been recognized for having the top-performing PhD thesis ahead of the 54th convocation ceremony at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Vice-chancellor Prof. Folasade Ogunsola disclosed this information to journalists on Wednesday.
Prof. Ogunsola highlighted that among the first degree recipients, 340 achieved first-class honors, with David Oluwatomiwa Akanmu attaining a flawless cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 5.0 from the Faculty of Engineering.
She shared, “This year, we will be graduating 17,464 students. Of these, 10,578 will receive first degrees and 6,886 are postgraduate. Of those with first degrees, 340 are first class with 97 coming from Management Sciences, followed by Science with 57 and Engineering 47.”
Ogunsola revealed additional details, including distinctions in various faculties, with David Oluwatomiwa Akanmu securing the title of overall best-graduating student with a perfect CGPA of 5.00.
Furthermore, she highlighted postgraduate achievements, with 465 earning postgraduate diplomas and 6,266 receiving master’s degrees, including 377 with distinctions. Notably, 31 of the master’s students are international, supported by a World Bank grant through the African Centre of Excellence for Drug Research, Herbal Medicine Development, and Regulatory Science (ACEDHERS).
The convocation will also award 155 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, with Aminat Olawunmi Ige receiving the overall best PhD Thesis award in the Sciences for her work in Mathematics, and Issa Akanji Adedokun honored for the best PhD in the humanities with a focus on Private and Property Law.
