Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has granted clemency to six inmates at the Nigerian Correctional Facility in Makurdi, the state capital.

This decision follows recommendations from the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, led by Hon. Fidelis Bemsen Mnyim, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order.

Among those released is Mr. Umar Dansabe, who had been on death row for over 14 years. He was sentenced for armed robbery after stealing a mobile phone from a woman in Gyado Villa, which he later sold for sixteen thousand naira.

Attorney General Mnyim emphasized that Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) empowers the governor to grant pardons to inmates who demonstrate genuine remorse and good character, making them fit for reintegration into society.

In announcing the pardons, the governor, represented by the Commissioner for Justice, clarified that the decision was based solely on the council’s recommendations and testimonials from clergy and community members who engaged with the inmates. He stressed that the action had no political motives.

Governor Alia noted that the released inmates have been equipped with various skills to promote self-reliance, and highlighted ongoing government initiatives aimed at empowering youth with relevant skills for better livelihoods.

He urged the pardoned individuals to embrace this opportunity for personal growth and to take advantage of the skill development programs available at the Makurdi correctional facility, the Makurdi fashion hub, and other initiatives from his administration.

The Commissioner for Justice and Public Order revealed that over thirty applications had been received from both correctional services and private individuals advocating for the inmates. He added, “Recognizing their sincerity and commitment to change, the governor has graciously pardoned six inmates based on the recommendations from the Judicial Commission on the Prerogative of Mercy.”
