Tragic news swept through Kwara State University as Deputy Bursar Ayuba Abdullahi passed away while engrossed in the thrilling semi-final clash between Nigeria and South Africa at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
Abdullahi’s sudden demise marks the latest Nigerian casualty reported following the gripping match, which saw Nigeria emerge victorious with a 4-2 penalty shootout win after regulation and extra time ended 1-1.
Confirming the heartbreaking news, the university’s Director of Information, Saedat Aliyu, expressed condolences and revealed that Abdullahi’s cause of death was yet to be determined by the university’s management.
While he was reportedly hale and hearty on Wednesday at his office, Abdullahi’s sudden passing has left the university community in shock and sorrow.
A statement released by the university announced Abdullahi’s death and outlined plans for his Janazah, scheduled to take place at the Hausa Muslim cemetery in Ilorin.
According to sources close to Abdullahi, he had gone to a sports center in the Sango area to watch the match. However, he began feeling unwell as the game progressed, and upon returning home, he collapsed.
Despite efforts to save him, Abdullahi tragically passed away before receiving medical attention at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital. He was laid to rest on Thursday morning in accordance with Islamic rites.
