The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken decisive action by shutting down a branch of the popular food outlet, KFC, at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos State.

According to a statement released on Thursday by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the closure was initiated due to violations of the Lagos State law on People with Special Needs.

The statement, titled ‘FAAN Shuts Down KFC Outlet at MMIA,’ highlighted that the closure was prompted by a social media report from a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM) who reported discriminatory treatment at the airport.

“In line with the Lagos State law on People with Special Needs, FAAN has closed the KFC facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos with effect from March 28, 2024,” the statement read.

FAAN’s Managing Director/CEO, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, swiftly intervened by dispatching a management team to investigate the matter, which included Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Mr. Sunday Ayodele, Mrs. Ijeoma Nwosu-Igbo, and Mr. Kerri.

Based on the team’s findings, FAAN decided to shut down the KFC facility at MMIA, where the incident occurred.

The authority has demanded that KFC management issue a written apology to the affected PRM and display a policy statement of non-discrimination prominently at their facility’s entrance before resuming operations.

FAAN extended its apologies to the victim, Adebola Daniel, son of former Ogun State Governor Gbenga Daniel, and assured all airport users of its commitment to upholding the rights of every passenger.

Adebola Daniel recounted his distressing experience at the KFC outlet in a series of tweets posted on Wednesday, describing it as “the worst sort of public humiliation” he had ever endured.
