With just three weeks to go before the governorship election in Ondo State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured journalists that their safety will be prioritized during election coverage.
The commission also emphasized the importance of avoiding the publication and dissemination of fake news in the lead-up to the election scheduled for November 16.
During a media workshop organized by INEC in Akure, the state capital, Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, highlighted that arrangements had been made in collaboration with security agencies to ensure journalists’ safety throughout the election period.
Represented by Oluwatoyin Babalola, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Olumekun urged journalists to commit to accurate reporting during this critical time.
“As the election approaches, the threat of misinformation remains a major concern. I encourage you to be vigilant and verify information before sharing it, especially regarding the Commission’s activities and the electoral process,” he stated.
He further expressed the need for journalists to educate the public about the importance of peaceful engagement and to provide balanced coverage of all political parties and candidates, ensuring that reports remain objective and unbiased.
“During the election, your reporting must be factual and responsible. While we support timely coverage of events, it is vital that this is done in a way that does not heighten tensions or provoke violence. Your presence at polling units will be key in assuring the public of the election’s transparency and integrity,” Olumekun added.
Mr. Biodun Amosu, the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Ondo State, explained that the workshop aimed to equip journalists with vital information on the guidelines and processes governing the upcoming election.
He assured attendees that INEC had implemented comprehensive measures to facilitate a smooth electoral process and committed to conducting a free, fair, transparent, and credible election. He emphasized that media cooperation is crucial in achieving these objectives.
“As media professionals, it’s essential that you understand these processes to ensure accurate reporting and to prevent the spread of speculation and misinformation,” Amosu urged.
