Olabode Olawuyi, the dedicated zookeeper at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, who tragically lost his life while attempting to rescue a colleague from a lion attack, has been laid to rest.
Mr. Olawuyi, a respected veterinary technologist, met his untimely demise on February 19, when a nine-year-old lion at the university’s zoological garden turned aggressive. He valiantly intervened to save his fellow colleague during the harrowing incident.
The solemn burial ceremony took place on Wednesday at the OAU Cemetery, following a poignant funeral service held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Ile-Ife. Family, friends, and colleagues, alongside university staff, gathered to bid farewell to the departed soul.
During the service, Pastor Olu Okotoni delivered a stirring sermon, emphasizing the inevitability of death and the importance of spiritual preparation for life’s final journey. He highlighted Olawuyi’s selfless act of bravery, describing it as a testament to his character and faith.
“We believe we will see him again on the glorious day. He was a born-again Christian until his last breath, and he lived a fulfilled life,” Pastor Okotoni remarked, offering solace to the grieving congregation.
Meanwhile, university spokesperson Abiodun Olarewaju confirmed that the male lion responsible for the tragic incident was euthanized to prevent further harm. Olawuyi, who had dedicated over a decade to caring for the zoological garden, leaves behind a legacy of service and sacrifice that will be remembered by all who knew him.
