The late former Minister of Finance, Onaolapo Soleye, has been laid to rest, marking the end of an era for Nigeria’s economic landscape.
A solemn funeral service held on Friday was attended by dignitaries including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, and former Governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, alongside Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, among others.
Governor Abiodun took to Instagram to pay tribute to Soleye, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping economic policies, implementing crucial reforms, and fostering sustainable growth during his tenure as finance minister.
“Dr. Soneye’s passing has left a void that will be hard to fill,” Abiodun remarked. “His legacy as a statesman, mentor, and role model will be cherished by future generations. His wisdom, integrity, and commitment to public service will serve as a source of inspiration for us all.”
Soleye’s demise occurred in the early hours of November 15, 2023, at the age of 90, just days after celebrating his 90th birthday on November 11, 2023. As finance minister during the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), Soleye left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s economic landscape, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come.
