The Anambra State Police Command successfully intervened to save a 27-year-old man, Alozie John, from a suicide attempt in Umunnachi community, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
Alozie, a livestock dealer originally from Isielu LGA in Ebonyi State, reportedly attempted to take his life due to a debt of ₦1.2 million owed to his livestock supplier.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, shared that security operatives acted swiftly on Friday after intercepting a concerning WhatsApp message from the young man.
“On August 23, 2024, Anambra police officers rescued a young man who had attempted suicide. He was given immediate medical assistance, debriefed, and is now in safe custody under close monitoring,” Ikenga reported.
The man, identified as Alozie John, had engaged with the police via WhatsApp, revealing that he had ingested a poisonous substance in despair over his debt. Despite taking the toxic chemical, he did not immediately feel its effects, prompting further concern.
“After confessing his struggles, we reached out to his mother, who is now working closely with the police to ensure her son receives the necessary care. He has since been transferred to a more specialized facility for further treatment and evaluation,” Ikenga added.
The quick response by the police highlights the importance of vigilance and timely intervention in mental health crises.
