The Rivers State Police Command has announced the arrest of a security guard, Meshark Monday, for allegedly stealing a car along Aba Road in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Police reports indicate that Monday attempted to sell the vehicle, which belonged to a customer and was under repair at his workplace, before being apprehended.
Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson for the state police command, provided details in a statement released on Sunday.
The statement reads, “Meshark Monday, a 27-year-old from Ogoni in Rivers State, was apprehended by operatives of the Olu Obasanjo Division on May 2 around 12:45 am. He was caught driving a Toyota Corolla along Olu Obasanjo Road.
“Monday’s suspicious behavior drew the officers’ attention as he tried to evade them near the G.R.A junction. After a high-speed pursuit along Aba Road, he was successfully detained.
“During interrogation, Monday, a security officer at Geepap Mobile Company, confessed to the theft. Despite his two-year tenure, he had hidden his driving skills. He admitted to stealing the car in a moment of desperation to sell it and improve his life circumstances.”
Iringe-Koko revealed that Geepap’s General Manager, Mr. Godfrey, was unaware of Monday’s driving abilities, as the stolen vehicle was being serviced.
She added, “The case has been charged to court. Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to apprehend Monday’s accomplices in the car theft ring.”
Iringe-Koko also conveyed a message from the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, urging individuals to install security cameras and alarms to prevent such incidents during non-working hours.
