The Borno State Police Command confirmed on Tuesday the death of Professor Ruth Wazis, the former head of Business Management at the University of Maiduguri.
In a press statement obtained by our correspondent, Public Relations Officer Nahum Kenneth revealed that the former university lecturer was tragically killed by her vehicle when she tried to open the gate upon arriving at her home.
Kenneth explained that the investigation showed the area was not flat, which caused the car to roll and fatally hit Professor Wazis.
The incident occurred on June 30, 2024, with Kenneth attributing the tragedy to the slope and a mechanical fault in the vehicle.
Kenneth stated, “Incidents and accidents are bound to happen, with both technical and human failures possibly contributing.”
He described the unfortunate event, saying, “The tragic garage incident occurred in the late evening of June 30, 2024, at the Judari Polo Area in Maiduguri. Professor Ruth Wazis had just stepped out of her vehicle to open her residential gate to park in her garage.”
Detailing the events leading to her death, Kenneth added, “Unfortunately, due to a steep slope and sudden mechanical malfunction, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly, pinning her to the gate and ground. The vehicle struck her chest, causing severe injuries. She succumbed to these injuries before she could be taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead by a doctor.”
