The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has described the passing of Afenifere leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo as an iconic transition, emphasizing his unwavering dedication to the principles of Afenifere throughout his lifetime. YEPS News gathered that in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, on Saturday in Osogbo, the revered monarch highlighted Adebanjo’s profound influence beyond politics.
According to the Ooni, Adebanjo was not just a political figure but a custodian of Yoruba ideals, a fearless advocate for justice, equity, and true federalism—principles upon which Nigeria was originally envisioned.
A Life of Service and Legacy
Oba Ogunwusi stated that as the Arole Oduduwa, he does not mourn but rather celebrates the remarkable legacy of Adebanjo, who passed at the age of 96 after a lifetime of service to democracy and good governance.
“Pa Ayo Adebanjo was more than a political leader; he was a moral compass, a relentless voice of the people, and a beacon of Yoruba unity. His dedication to the Afenifere movement remained steadfast, and his life was a blueprint for integrity, leadership, and selfless service,” the statement read.
The Ooni further noted that Adebanjo’s passage marks his ascension into the ranks of great Yoruba forebears, joining legendary figures like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Ooni Adesoji Aderemi, whose efforts shaped the destiny of the Yoruba people.
A Call for Continued Legacy
Oba Ogunwusi expressed hope that Adebanjo’s values would continue to inspire future generations, urging leaders to embrace truth, justice, and unity.
“The House of Oduduwa celebrates his enduring impact, and we pray that his legacy will guide our leaders while inspiring the younger generation. May his soul find rest among the noble ones of our land,” the statement concluded.
