Security personnel were actively setting up roadblocks across Benin City as early as 6:00 a.m. in preparation for the Edo governorship election, scheduled to commence at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday.
According to reports from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the security forces began halting vehicles, conducting searches, and questioning occupants to ensure law, order, and safety during the election process.
Despite the heightened security, some commercial bus drivers, aiming for early business, found ways to bypass the checkpoints to avoid interacting with security officials.
Military presence was notably strong around the popular Ring Road, particularly along Sapele Road, Forestry Junction, and other key areas, with an armoured tank positioned at the city’s centre for added security.
In addition to the military deployment, roadblocks were observed at Okida Road, Ekewaun Road, and near the INEC office at Ikpoba Hill. The Agbado Market area and key sections of Akpakpava and Sapele Roads also saw increased security checks.
Though vehicular traffic was sparse, some pedestrians, likely voters, were spotted making their way along the roads.
