The Federal Government has announced that full-scale repairs on the collapsed Namnai Bridge in Gassol Local Government Area, Taraba State, will begin next week, bringing much-needed relief to motorists and residents affected by the bridge’s failure.
The bridge, which gave way during last year’s rainy season, has severely disrupted transportation and economic activities in the region.
During an inspection visit to the site on Thursday, Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari, described the situation as critical, emphasizing the urgency of government intervention. He assured that immediate steps would be taken to restore the vital roadway and ease the hardship faced by commuters.
According to Maigari, engineers and technical experts have already completed assessments to determine the best reconstruction approach. He also highlighted the Federal Government’s collaboration with the Taraba State Government to fast-track the project and ensure a lasting solution.
“The North East Development Commission had earlier deployed engineers and quantity surveyors to assess the extent of damage. The Namnai Bridge is among 12 bridges designated for emergency intervention across the North-East. Its collapse was an unforeseen natural disaster,” he stated.
Maigari further disclosed that discussions on Namnai, Mayokam, Suntai, and Bantaji bridges had been ongoing, with Taraba State Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas visiting the ministry six weeks ago to address the issue.
He also revealed that the recently awarded Akwana Road project aligns with the government’s broader commitment to infrastructure development in Taraba State.
“As a responsible administration, we are committed to taking swift action, including working closely with the state government, to ensure that this bridge is rebuilt without delay. We understand the urgency, and within a week, we will have a solution in place,” Maigari assured.
Reports indicate that local residents had earlier attempted makeshift repairs on the Namnai Bridge, but heavy rains on Tuesday night washed away the temporary structure, further worsening the situation along the Jalingo-Wukari Federal Highway.
