Actor Yemi Solade has stepped up to defend Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi against the barrage of criticism following Nigeria’s defeat to Cote d’Ivoire in the finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In the tense showdown at the Alassane Quattara Olympic Stadium in Abidjan, the Eagles fell short, succumbing to a 2-1 loss against the Elephants, who clinched their third AFCON title.
In the aftermath of the match, Iwobi, along with Ola Aina and others, bore the brunt of criticism, with some fans questioning coach Jose Peseiro’s decision to include Iwobi in the starting lineup.
By Tuesday, it was noted that Iwobi had wiped clean all his posts on Instagram, a move that did not go unnoticed.
Taking to Instagram to address the issue, Yemi Solade condemned the cyberbullies targeting the 27-year-old midfielder, emphasizing that representing one’s country is not a crime.

“Iwobi has committed NO OFFENSE by representing his nation. Yet, those afflicted with short-sightedness choose to bully him for the Super Eagles’ failure to seize victory and hoist the trophy at AFCON ’23, which concluded on Sunday, February 11, 2023.
“I pose this question: What prevents the kin of these CYBER-BULLIES from encouraging their own sons to don the Nigerian jersey and play football for their country? NARROW-MINDEDNESS… Friend, Let Wisdom Prevail!
“ALEX IWOBI remains an accomplished and triumphant footballer. While you continue to critique, your words fall flat as you cannot even kick a ball.”
